We live in a world of very clever and ingenious individuals, who create the most awesome craft items, jewellery and home wares. Nana tech is HUGE! We are returning to a very interesting and thrifty time. Women and Men are going bespoke, hand crafting and creating a new world. It’s the greatest time to be alive and creative!!
Always on the creative prowl, I had an opportunity a couple of years ago to try sand blasting / etching wine bottles for an Art school project. I liked the idea, but filed it away for “later”, focusing more on building my technical and practical tool handling skills.
“Later” happened about 2 months ago, when I revisited the idea of etching designs onto bottles and jars. I could go ahead with this project as I had access to a sand blasting unit, courtesy of my Dad, (whose workshop is right next door to my studio.) Initially we were reworking an idea I had of recycling jars that had accumulated under my cupboard. Giving them new life as treasure holders, with colourful lids, ready to serve as lolly or loose change jars.
At markets it was really the wine bottles that caught people’s attention. The re-used wine bottle as water bottle is something we have all experienced in cafes and restaurants, and people were readily able to visualize what they could use the repurposed wine bottles for. Settling on designs was really a matter of trying designs that would work on a curved surface and also taking note of what was selling at the markets I attended. Researching this type of repurposed wine bottle has shown me that what I am producing is unique. I have yet to find another artisan in my locale that is producing a recycled product like this.
So why do I do it?? I think it’s in my DNA!! I am proud to come from a family of savers and collectors. My paternal grandmother always had saved butchers paper for us to draw on and the silver caps off the milk bottles to craft with. My parents have always appreciated antiques and are not known to throw out anything “useful”. We always had a pantry full of jams and bottled fruit, and kept the bottles and jars to be reused again and again. I also feel that we live in a way that discards so much that is useful, and as an artist, you hone your ‘scrounging’ skills, as your desire to create can sometimes outstrip the allocated funds!
